John Cawley is a Professor in the Department of Policy Analysis and Management, and the Department of Economics, at Cornell University. He is a Visiting Professor at the Erasmus School of Economics in the Netherlands and an Honorary Professor of Economics at National University of Ireland, Galway.

John's primary field of research is health economics, with a focus on the economics of obesity. He studies the economic causes of obesity, the economic consequences of obesity (with a particular focus on the impact of obesity on labor market outcomes), and economic approaches to obesity treatment and prevention.

John co-directs Cornell's Institute for Health Economics, Health Behaviors and Disparities. In addition to his affiliations with Cornell and IZA, John is a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research. John is also an Editor of theJournal of Health Economics.

John received his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Chicago and his undergraduate degree in economics from Harvard University.

He joined IZA as a Research Fellow in May 2011.
