Stephen's first published papers were about the intergenerational inheritance of income and the economics of English provincial repertory theatre, but most subsequent ones have been about income distribution and the labour market. His current research focuses on income and poverty trends and dynamics, labour force transitions, and measurement errors of various kinds. Stephen's publications have appeared in a wide range of international journals and edited volumes.
